About the Residents Association

Who are we?

We are all residents who live in the building, ranging from decades to a few years. Du Cane Court is our home, and we care about making it as great a place to live as possible. We are all volunteers who do not earn anything from involvement in the RA.

What does the RA Committee do?

The RA exists to represent the residents to the building management and freeholder. We can:

  • Request a summary of the annual service charge expenditure.
  • Ask to inspect relevant accounts and receipts.
  • Request a summary of the insurance cover and inspect the policy.
  • Be consulted regarding the manager the landlord appoints or retains.
  • Propose contractors for consideration when the landlord or manager is carrying out major works, and inspect the specifications and estimates.

What can the RA Committee not do?

Whilst we can review the service charge and raise queries, we do not have any decision-making powers relating to it. We have a constructive relationship with both Dorrington and POD, but neither are legally obliged to comply with any suggestions we make. Similarly we do not have control over national factors — e.g. fire safety regulations or energy prices — which impact living in a building like DCC as well as the service charge. Whilst we have a range of experience across the Committee, we cannot offer legal advice to residents.

Membership

Can I join the RA?

Yes, membership is open to all residents and leaseholders. You can join if you are an owner-occupier, landlord, or tenant. It is free of charge, though you are welcome to make a small donation to help cover administrative and logistical costs.

How do I join?

At the moment we have a form which can be filled out and emailed to ducanecourtresidents@gmail.com. We will be looking at new ways to streamline this process. You can download the membership form here.

Why should I join?

With more members our voice is more powerful and representative when we speak to POD/Dorrington. We understand that there are many different experiences and issues that residents face, but without an active membership we cannot convey those all accurately. Membership costs nothing, and we will be introducing more ways of communicating with members to share relevant information and updates. Thanks to work by our Vice Chair Jef, your membership card will get you some great discounts at local businesses.

Getting Involved

Can I join the committee?

Yes. We are always looking for new Committee members to help us out. If you have a background in regulation, finance or building management then there are particular roles that would benefit hugely from this, but this isn't necessary — we are keen that the Committee should be as representative as possible.

What events are coming up?

The Committee meets every month. The Chair — Alex Harrison — and Vice Chair — Jef Sutherland — meet with Building Manager David O'Reilly every week to receive updates and raise any issues. The AGM will be happening in June, and this is a chance for all members of the RA to vote for Committee Members. We will also be looking into holding more regular drop-in sessions and coffee mornings following a successful trial by Jef, where members can have a chat and pass on any feedback or issues for us to take to David.
